  By faith we find the place above, The Rock that rent in twain; Beneath the shade of divine love, And in the clefts remain. Jesus, to Thy dear wounds we flee, We sink into Thy side; Assured that all who trust in Thee Shall evermore abide. Then let the thundering trumpet sound, The latest lightning glare, The mountains melt, the solid ground Dissolve as liquid air. The huge celestial bodies roll, Amidst that general fire, And shrivel as a parchment scroll, And all in smoke expire! Yet still the Lord, the Savior reigns, When nature is destroyed, And no created thing remains Throughout the flaming void. Sublime upon His azure throne, He speaks the almighty word; His fiat is obeyed! ’tis done; And Paradise restored. So be it! let this system end, This ruinous earth and skies, The new Jerusalem descend, The new creation rise! Thy power omnipotent assume, Thy brightest majesty! And when Thou dost in glory come, My Lord, remember me! Woe to the men on earth who dwell, Nor dread the Almighty’s frown, When God doth all His wrath reveal, And shower his judgments down! Sinners, expect those heaviest showers, To meet your God prepare; For, lo! the seventh angel pours His phial in the air. Lo! from their seats the mountains leap, The mountains are not found; Transported far into the deep, And in the ocean drowned. Who then shall live, and face the throne, And face the Judge severe? When heaven and earth are fled and gone, O where shall I appear? Now, only now, against that hour We may a place provide; Beyond the grave, beyond the power Of hell, our spirits hide. Firm in the all destroying shock, May view the final scene; For, lo! the everlasting Rock Is cleft to take us in.

  All ye Gentile lands awake! Thou, O Salem, rise and shine! See the day-spring o’er you break, Heralding a morn divine, Telling, God hath called to mind Those who long in darkness pined. Lo! the shadows flee away, For our Light is come at length, Brighter than all earthly day, Source of being, life and strength! Whoso on this Light would gaze Must forsake all evil ways. Ah how blindly did we stray Ere shone forth this glorious Sun, Seeking each his separate way, Leaving Heaven, unsought, unwon; All our looks were earthward bent, All our strength on earth was spent. Earthly were our thoughts and low, In the toils of folly caught, Tossed of Satan to and fro, Counting goodness all for naught; By the world and flesh deceived, Heaven’s true joys we disbelieved. Then were hidden from our eyes All the law and grace of God; Rich and poor, the fools and wise, Wanting light to find the road Leading to the heavenly life, Wandered lost in care and strife. But the glory of the Lord Hath arisen on us today; We have seen the light outpoured That must surely drive away All things that to night belong, All the sad earth’s woe and wrong.   Eternal Light! eternal Light! How pure the soul must be When, placed within Thy searching sight, It shrinks not, but with calm delight Can live, and look on Thee! The spirits that surround Thy throne May bear the burning bliss; But that is surely theirs alone, Since they have never, never known A fallen world like this. O how shall I, whose native sphere Is dark, whose mind is dim, Before the Ineffable appear, And on my naked spirit bear That uncreated beam? There is a way for man to rise To that sublime abode: An offering and a sacrifice, A Holy Spirit’s energies, An Advocate with God.   O Word of God incarnate, O Wisdom from on high, O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky: We praise You for the radiance that from the hallowed page, A Lantern to our footsteps, shines on from age to age. The Church from You, our Savior, received the Gift divine, And still that Light is lifted over all the earth to shine. It is the sacred Vessel where gems of truth are stored; It is the heaven drawn Picture of Christ, the living Word. The Scripture is a banner before God’s host unfurled; It is a shining Beacon above the darkling world. It is the Chart and Compass that over life’s surging tide, Mid mists and rocks and quicksands, to You, O Christ, will guide.   The Son forsook the Father’s home For mercy to lost man, And did not scorn the virgin’s womb To bear the sinner’s ban. Meekly the maiden pure believed The great archangel’s word, And by the Holy Ghost conceived The Savior Christ the Lord. The Word made flesh creation sees, Its mighty God in Man: Great mystery of mysteries Since ever time began!   O Christ, who art the Light and Day, Thou drivest darksome night away! We know Thee as the Light of light Illuminating mortal sight. All holy Lord, we pray to Thee, Keep us tonight from danger free; Grant us, dear Lord, in Thee to rest, So be our sleep in quiet blest. Let not the tempter round us creep With thoughts of evil while we sleep, Nor with his wiles the flesh allure And make us in Thy sight impure. And while the eyes soft slumber take, Still be the heart to Thee awake, Be Thy right hand upheld above Thy servants resting in Thy love.   When we cross the valley there need be no shadows, When life’s day is ended and its sorrows o’er; When the summons comes to meet the blessèd Savior, When we rise to dwell with Him forevermore.
