The Lover to His Beloved:

1:8 If you do not know, O most beautiful of women,

simply follow the tracks of my flock,

and pasture your little lambs

beside the tents of the shepherds.

5:9 Why is your beloved better than others, ¹ 

O most beautiful of women?

Why is your beloved better than others,

that you would command us in this manner?

The Lost Lover Found

The Maidens to the Beloved:

6:1 Where has your beloved gone,

O most beautiful among women?

Where has your beloved turned?

Tell us, ²  that we may seek him with you. ³ 

[5:9]  ¹ tn Heb “How is your beloved [better] than [another] lover?”

[6:1]  ² tn The phrase “Tell us!” does not appear in the Hebrew but is supplied in the translation for the sake of smoothness.

[6:1]  ³ tn Heb “And we may seek him with you.” The vav-conjunctive on וּנְבַקְשֶׁנּוּ (unÿvaqshennu, “and we may seek him with you”) denotes purpose/result.
