125:5 As for those who are bent on traveling a sinful path, 1 

may the Lord remove them, 2  along with those who behave wickedly! 3

11:6 The Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and he became very angry. 11:7 He took a pair 7  of oxen and cut them up. Then he sent the pieces throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, who said, “Whoever does not go out after Saul and after Samuel should expect this to be done to his oxen!” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they went out as one army. 8  11:8 When Saul counted them at Bezek, the Israelites were 300,000 9  strong and the men of Judah numbered 30,000. 10 

11:9 They said to the messengers who had come, “Here’s what you should say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: ‘Tomorrow deliverance will come to you when the sun is fully up.’” When the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh Gilead, they were happy. 11:10 The men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you 11  and you can do with us whatever you wish.” 12 

11:11 The next day Saul placed the people in three groups. They went to the Ammonite camp during the morning watch and struck them 13  down until the hottest part of the day. The survivors scattered; no two of them remained together.

11:12 Then the people said to Samuel, “Who were the ones asking, ‘Will Saul reign over us?’ Hand over those men so we may execute them!” 11:13 But Saul said, “No one will be killed on this day. For today the Lord has given Israel a victory!”

[125:5]  1 tn Heb “and the ones making their paths twisted.” A sinful lifestyle is compared to a twisting, winding road.

[125:5]  2 tn Heb “lead them away.” The prefixed verbal form is understood as a jussive of prayer here (note the prayers directly before and after this). Another option is to translate, “the Lord will remove them” (cf. NIV, NRSV).

[125:5]  3 tn Heb “the workers of wickedness.”

[125:5]  4 tn Heb “peace [be] upon Israel.” The statement is understood as a prayer (see Ps 122:8 for a similar prayer for peace).

[125:1]  5 sn Psalm 125. The psalmist affirms his confidence in the Lord’s protection and justice.

This does not necessarily mean that the Lord had already conducted his search and made his choice, however. The forms may be used for rhetorical effect to emphasize the certainty of the action. The divine search for a new king is as good as done, emphasizing that the days of Saul’s dynasty are numbered.

[13:14]  17 tn Heb “according to his heart.” The idiomatic expression means to be like-minded with another, as its use in 1 Sam 14:7 indicates.

[13:14]  18 tn Heb “commanded.”

[16:14]  19 tn Or “an injurious spirit”; cf. NLT “a tormenting spirit.” The phrase need not refer to an evil, demonic spirit. The Hebrew word translated “evil” may refer to the character of the spirit or to its effect upon Saul. If the latter, another translation option might be “a mischief-making spirit.”

[1:6]  20 tn Heb “turn back from [following] after.”

[1:6]  21 tn Heb “who do not seek the Lord and do not inquire of him.” The present translation assumes the first verb refers to praying for divine help and the second to seeking his revealed will through an oracle. Note the usage of the two verbs in 2 Chr 20:3-4.

[10:39]  22 tn Grk “not…of shrinking back to perdition but of faith to the preservation of the soul.”

[10:1]  23 tn Grk “those who approach.”
