[4:24]  1 tn Here πνεῦμα (pneuma) is understood as a qualitative predicate nominative while the articular θεός (qeos) is the subject.

[6:71]  2 sn At least six explanations for the name Iscariot have been proposed, but it is probably transliterated Hebrew with the meaning “man of Kerioth” (there are at least two villages that had that name). See D. A. Carson, John, 304.

[6:71]  3 tn Grk “this one”; the referent (Judas) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[6:71]  4 sn This parenthetical statement by the author helps the reader understand Jesus’ statement one of you is the devil in the previous verse. This is the first mention of Judas in the Fourth Gospel, and he is immediately identified (as he is in the synoptic gospels, Matt 10:4, Mark 3:19, Luke 6:16) as the one who would betray Jesus.

[8:5]  5 sn An allusion to Lev 20:10 and Deut 22:22-24.

[8:5]  6 sn The accusers themselves subtly misrepresented the law. The Mosaic law stated that in the case of adultery, both the man and woman must be put to death (Lev 20:10, Deut 22:22), but they mentioned only such women.

[8:43]  7 tn Grk “you cannot hear,” but this is not a reference to deafness, but rather hearing in the sense of listening to something and responding to it.

[8:43]  8 tn Grk “my word.”

[12:4]  9 sn This is a parenthetical note by the author.

[17:2]  10 tn Or “all people”; Grk “all flesh.”

[17:2]  11 tn Grk “so that to everyone whom you have given to him, he may give to them eternal life.”

[18:8]  12 tn Grk “Jesus answered.”

[18:8]  13 tn Grk “if you are seeking.”

[18:8]  14 tn The word “men” is not in the Greek text but is implied. The translation uses the word “men” here rather than a more generic word like “people” because in context Jesus referred only to the eleven remaining disciples who were loyal to him and were present at his arrest.

[18:8]  15 sn A second time Jesus replied, “I told you that I am he,” identifying himself as the one they are seeking. Jesus also added, “If you are looking for me, let these men go.” Jesus successfully diverted attention from his disciples by getting the soldiers and officers of the chief priests to admit (twice) that it is only him they were after. Even in this hour Jesus still protected and cared for his own, giving himself up on their behalf. By handing himself over to his enemies, Jesus ensured that his disciples went free. From the perspective of the author, this is acting out beforehand what Jesus will actually do for his followers when he goes to the cross.

[18:32]  16 tn The words “This happened” are not in the Greek text but are implied.

[18:32]  17 tn Or “making clear.”

[18:32]  18 sn A reference to John 12:32.
