7:7 Remember 1 that my life is but a breath,
that 2 my eyes will never again 3 see happiness.
7:8 The eye of him who sees me now will see me no more; 4
your eyes will look for me, but I will be gone. 5
7:9 As 6 a cloud is dispersed and then disappears, 7
so the one who goes down to the grave 8
does not come up again. 9
7:10 He returns no more to his house,
nor does his place of residence 10 know him 11 any more.
7:11 “Therefore, 12 I will not refrain my mouth; 13
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
I will complain 14 in the bitterness of my soul.
7:12 Am I the sea, or the creature of the deep, 15
that you must put 16 me under guard? 17
7:13 If 18 I say, 19 “My bed will comfort me, 20
my couch will ease 21 my complaint,”
7:14 then you scare me 22 with dreams
and terrify 23 me with 24 visions,
7:15 so that I 25 would prefer 26 strangling, 27
and 28 death 29 more 30 than life. 31
7:16 I loathe 32 it; 33 I do not want to live forever;
leave me alone, 34 for my days are a vapor! 35
7:17 “What is mankind 36 that you make so much of them, 37
and that you pay attention 38 to them?
7:18 And that you visit 39 them every morning,
and try 40 them every moment? 41
7:19 Will you never 42 look away from me, 43
will you not let me alone 44
long enough to swallow my spittle?
7:20 If 45 I have sinned – what have I done to you, 46
O watcher of men? 47
Why have you set me as your target? 48
Have I become a burden to you? 49
7:21 And why do you not pardon my transgression,
and take away my iniquity?
For now I will lie down in the dust, 50
and you will seek me diligently, 51
but I will be gone.”
