Ratapan 4:1-2

The Prophet Speaks:

א (Alef)

4:1 ¹ Alas! ²  Gold has lost its luster; ³ 

pure gold loses value. ⁴ 

Jewels ⁵  are scattered

on every street corner. ⁶ 

ב (Bet)

4:2 The precious sons of Zion

were worth their weight in gold –

Alas! – but now they are treated like ⁷  broken clay pots,

made by a potter. ⁸ 

Rut 1:19-20

1:19 So the two of them ⁹  journeyed together until they arrived in Bethlehem. ¹⁰ 

Naomi and Ruth Arrive in Bethlehem

When they entered ¹¹  Bethlehem, ¹²  the whole village was excited about their arrival. ¹³  The women of the village said, ¹⁴  “Can this be Naomi?” ¹⁵  1:20 But she replied ¹⁶  to them, ¹⁷  “Don’t call me ‘Naomi’! ¹⁸  Call me ‘Mara’ ¹⁹  because the Sovereign One ²⁰  has treated me very harshly. ²¹ 

Ayub 2:12

2:12 But when they gazed intently ²²  from a distance but did not recognize ²³  him, they began to weep loudly. Each of them tore his robes, and they threw dust into the air over their heads. ²⁴ 

Yesaya 52:14

52:14 (just as many were horrified by the sight of you) ²⁵ 

he was so disfigured ²⁶  he no longer looked like a man; ²⁷
