Lukas 10:9-42

10:9 Heal the sick in that town and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come upon you!’ 10:10 But whenever you enter a town and the people do not welcome you, go into its streets and say, 10:11 ‘Even the dust of your town 10  that clings to our feet we wipe off 11  against you. 12  Nevertheless know this: The kingdom of God has come.’ 13  10:12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom 14  than for that town! 15

10:13 “Woe to you, Chorazin! 16  Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if 17  the miracles 18  done in you had been done in Tyre 19  and Sidon, 20  they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 10:14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you! 10:15 And you, Capernaum, 21  will you be exalted to heaven? 22  No, you will be thrown down to Hades! 23

10:16 “The one who listens 24  to you listens to me, 25  and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects 26  the one who sent me.” 27

10:17 Then 28  the seventy-two 29  returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to 30  us in your name!” 31  10:18 So 32  he said to them, “I saw 33  Satan fall 34  like lightning 35  from heaven. 10:19 Look, I have given you authority to tread 36  on snakes and scorpions 37  and on the full force of the enemy, 38  and nothing will 39  hurt you. 10:20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice that 40  the spirits submit to you, but rejoice 41  that your names stand written 42  in heaven.”

10:21 On that same occasion 43  Jesus 44  rejoiced 45  in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise 46  you, Father, Lord 47  of heaven and earth, because 48  you have hidden these things from the wise 49  and intelligent, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will. 50  10:22 All things have been given to me by my Father. 51  No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son decides 52  to reveal him.”

10:23 Then 53  Jesus 54  turned 55  to his 56  disciples and said privately, “Blessed 57  are the eyes that see what you see! 10:24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings longed to see 58  what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

10:25 Now 59  an expert in religious law 60  stood up to test Jesus, 61  saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 62  10:26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you understand it?” 63  10:27 The expert 64  answered, “Love 65  the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, 66  and love your neighbor as yourself.” 67  10:28 Jesus 68  said to him, “You have answered correctly; 69  do this, and you will live.”

10:29 But the expert, 70  wanting to justify 71  himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 10:30 Jesus replied, 72  “A man was going down 73  from Jerusalem 74  to Jericho, 75  and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat 76  him up, and went off, leaving him half dead. 77  10:31 Now by chance 78  a priest was going down that road, but 79  when he saw the injured man 80  he passed by 81  on the other side. 82  10:32 So too a Levite, when he came up to 83  the place and saw him, 84  passed by on the other side. 10:33 But 85  a Samaritan 86  who was traveling 87  came to where the injured man 88  was, and when he saw him, he felt compassion for him. 89  10:34 He 90  went up to him 91  and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil 92  and wine on them. Then 93  he put him on 94  his own animal, 95  brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 10:35 The 96  next day he took out two silver coins 97  and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever else you spend, I will repay you when I come back this way.’ 98  10:36 Which of these three do you think became a neighbor 99  to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 10:37 The expert in religious law 100  said, “The one who showed mercy 101  to him.” So 102  Jesus said to him, “Go and do 103  the same.”

Jesus and Martha

10:38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus 104  entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. 105  10:39 She 106  had a sister named Mary, who sat 107  at the Lord’s feet 108  and listened to what he said. 10:40 But Martha was distracted 109  with all the preparations she had to make, 110  so 111  she came up to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care 112  that my sister has left me to do all the work 113  alone? Tell 114  her to help me.” 10:41 But the Lord 115  answered her, 116  “Martha, Martha, 117  you are worried and troubled 118  about many things, 10:42 but one thing 119  is needed. Mary has chosen the best 120  part; it will not be taken away from her.”
