19:11 While the people were listening to these things, Jesus 26 proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, 27 and because they thought 28 that the kingdom of God 29 was going to 30 appear immediately. 19:12 Therefore he said, “A nobleman 31 went to a distant country to receive 32 for himself a kingdom and then return. 33 19:13 And he summoned ten of his slaves, 34 gave them ten minas, 35 and said to them, ‘Do business with these until I come back.’ 19:14 But his citizens 36 hated 37 him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man 38 to be king 39 over us!’ 19:15 When 40 he returned after receiving the kingdom, he summoned 41 these slaves to whom he had given the money. He wanted 42 to know how much they had earned 43 by trading. 19:16 So 44 the first one came before him and said, ‘Sir, 45 your mina 46 has made ten minas more.’ 19:17 And the king 47 said to him, ‘Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful 48 in a very small matter, you will have authority 49 over ten cities.’ 19:18 Then 50 the second one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has made five minas.’ 19:19 So 51 the king 52 said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 19:20 Then another 53 slave 54 came and said, ‘Sir, here is 55 your mina that I put away for safekeeping 56 in a piece of cloth. 57 19:21 For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe 58 man. You withdraw 59 what you did not deposit 60 and reap what you did not sow.’ 19:22 The king 61 said to him, ‘I will judge you by your own words, 62 you wicked slave! 63 So you knew, did you, that I was a severe 64 man, withdrawing what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow? 19:23 Why then didn’t you put 65 my money in the bank, 66 so that when I returned I could have collected it with interest?’ 19:24 And he said to his attendants, 67 ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has ten.’ 68 19:25 But 69 they said to him, ‘Sir, he has ten minas already!’ 70 19:26 ‘I tell you that everyone who has will be given more, 71 but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 72 19:27 But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, 73 bring them here and slaughter 74 them 75 in front of me!’”
19:28 After Jesus 76 had said this, he continued on ahead, 77 going up to Jerusalem. 78 19:29 Now 79 when he approached Bethphage 80 and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, 81 he sent two of the disciples, 19:30 telling them, 82 “Go to the village ahead of you. 83 When 84 you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. 85 Untie it and bring it here. 19:31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs 86 it.’” 19:32 So those who were sent ahead found 87 it exactly 88 as he had told them. 19:33 As 89 they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, 90 “Why are you untying that colt?” 19:34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 19:35 Then 91 they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks 92 on the colt, 93 and had Jesus get on 94 it. 19:36 As 95 he rode along, they 96 spread their cloaks on the road. 19:37 As he approached the road leading down from 97 the Mount of Olives, 98 the whole crowd of his 99 disciples began to rejoice 100 and praise 101 God with a loud voice for all the mighty works 102 they had seen: 103 19:38 “Blessed is the king 104 who comes in the name of the Lord! 105 Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 19:39 But 106 some of the Pharisees 107 in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 108 19:40 He answered, 109 “I tell you, if they 110 keep silent, the very stones 111 will cry out!”
19:41 Now 112 when Jesus 113 approached 114 and saw the city, he wept over it, 19:42 saying, “If you had only known on this day, 115 even you, the things that make for peace! 116 But now they are hidden 117 from your eyes. 19:43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build 118 an embankment 119 against you and surround you and close in on you from every side. 19:44 They will demolish you 120 – you and your children within your walls 121 – and they will not leave within you one stone 122 on top of another, 123 because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.” 124
19:45 Then 125 Jesus 126 entered the temple courts 127 and began to drive out those who were selling things there, 128 19:46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer,’ 129 but you have turned it into a den 130 of robbers!” 131
19:47 Jesus 132 was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law 133 and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate 134 him, 19:48 but 135 they could not find a way to do it, 136 for all the people hung on his words. 137
