“I 1 called out to the Lord from my distress,
and he answered me; 2
from the belly of Sheol 3 I cried out for help,
and you heard my prayer. 4
2:3 You threw me 5 into the deep waters, 6
into the middle 7 of the sea; 8
the ocean current 9 engulfed 10 me;
all the mighty waves 11 you sent 12 swept 13 over me. 14
2:4 I thought 15 I had been banished from your sight, 16
that I would never again 17 see your holy temple! 18
2:5 Water engulfed me up to my neck; 19
the deep ocean 20 surrounded me;
seaweed 21 was wrapped around my head.
2:6 I went down 22 to the very bottoms 23 of the mountains; 24
the gates 25 of the netherworld 26 barred me in 27 forever; 28
but you brought me 29 up from the Pit, 30 O Lord, my God.
2:7 When my life 31 was ebbing away, 32 I called out to 33 the Lord,
and my prayer came to your holy temple. 34
2:8 Those who worship 35 worthless idols 36 forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. 37
2:9 But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration 38 of praise; 39
I will surely do 40 what I have promised. 41
Salvation 42 belongs to the Lord!” 43
2:10 Then the Lord commanded 44 the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land.
