Summary of the Letter

3:8 This saying 7  is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on such truths, 8  so that those who have placed their faith in God may be intent on engaging in good works. These things are good and beneficial for all people. 3:9 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, 9  quarrels, and fights about the law, 10  because they are useless and empty.

[18:26]  1 tn Heb “and they took the bull which he allowed them.”

[18:26]  2 tn Heb “limped” (the same verb is used in v. 21).

[18:26]  3 tc The MT has “which he made,” but some medieval Hebrew mss and the ancient versions have the plural form of the verb.

[4:8]  4 tn Grk “those that by nature…” with the word “beings” implied. BDAG 1070 s.v. φύσις 2 sees this as referring to pagan worship: “Polytheists worship…beings that are by nature no gods at all Gal 4:8.”

[4:2]  5 tn The Greek term translated “guardians” here is ἐπίτροπος (epitropo"), whose semantic domain overlaps with that of παιδαγωγός (paidagwgo") according to L&N 36.5.

[4:2]  6 tn Grk “the,” but the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun (ExSyn 215).

[3:8]  7 sn This saying (Grk “the saying”) refers to the preceding citation (Titus 3:4-7). See 1 Tim 1:15; 3:1; 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11 for other occurrences of this phrase.

[3:8]  8 tn Grk “concerning these things.”

[3:9]  9 tn Cf. 1 Tim 1:4.

[3:9]  10 sn Fights about the law were characteristic of the false teachers in Ephesus as well as in Crete (cf. 1 Tim 1:3-7; Titus 1:10, 14).
