1 Raja-raja 11:7-8

11:7 Furthermore, ¹  on the hill east of Jerusalem ²  Solomon built a high place ³  for the detestable Moabite god Chemosh ⁴  and for the detestable Ammonite god Milcom. ⁵  11:8 He built high places for all his foreign wives so they could burn incense and make sacrifices to their gods. ⁶

11:2 They came from nations about which the Lord had warned the Israelites, “You must not establish friendly relations with them! ⁷  If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods.” ⁸  But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them. ⁹

21:4 So Ahab went into his palace, bitter and angry that Naboth the Jezreelite had said, ¹⁰  “I will not sell to you my ancestral inheritance.” ¹¹  He lay down on his bed, pouted, ¹²  and would not eat. 21:5 Then his wife Jezebel came in and said to him, “Why do you have a bitter attitude and refuse to eat?”

Judgment on Israel

23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, ¹³  you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! ¹⁴  How often I have longed ¹⁵  to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but ¹⁶  you would have none of it! ¹⁷

The following sentences then revert to second person (“your… you”), so to keep all this consistent in English, the third person pronouns in the present verse were translated as second person (“you who kill… sent to you”).

[23:37]  ¹⁵ sn How often I have longed to gather your children. Jesus, like a lamenting prophet, speaks for God here, who longed to care tenderly for Israel and protect her.

[23:37]  ¹⁶ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.
