[14:15]  1 tn The elliptical Hebrew text reads literally “and the Lord will strike Israel as a reed sways in the water.”

[14:15]  2 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 22, 31).

[14:15]  3 tn Heb “the River.” In biblical Hebrew this is a typical reference to the Euphrates River. The name “Euphrates” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[14:15]  4 tn Heb “because they made their Asherah poles that anger the Lord”; or “their images of Asherah”; ASV, NASB “their Asherim”; NCV “they set up idols to worship Asherah.”

[14:15]  sn Asherah was a leading deity of the Canaanite pantheon, wife/sister of El and goddess of fertility. She was commonly worshiped at shrines in or near groves of evergreen trees, or, failing that, at places marked by wooden poles. These were to be burned or cut down (Deut 12:3; 16:21; Judg 6:25, 28, 30; 2 Kgs 18:4).

[16:34]  5 tn Heb “in his days.”

[16:34]  6 map For location see Map5 B2; Map6 E1; Map7 E1; Map8 E3; Map10 A2; Map11 A1.

[16:34]  7 tn Heb “with Abiram, his firstborn, he founded it.”

[16:34]  8 tn Heb “with Segub, his youngest, he set up its gates.”

[16:34]  9 tn Heb “according to the word of the Lord which he spoke.”

[16:34]  10 sn Warned through Joshua son of Nun. For the background to this statement, see Josh 6:26, where Joshua pronounces a curse on the one who dares to rebuild Jericho. Here that curse is viewed as a prophecy spoken by God through Joshua.

[22:19]  11 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Micaiah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
