[2:32]  1 tn Heb “The Lord will cause his blood to return upon his head.”

[2:32]  2 tn Heb “because he struck down two men more innocent and better than he and he killed them with the sword, and my father David did not know.”

[3:11]  3 tn Heb “because you asked for this thing, and did not ask for yourself many days and did not ask for yourself riches and did not ask for the life of your enemies, but you asked for yourself understanding to hear judgment.”

[3:26]  4 tn Heb “the woman whose son was alive.”

[3:26]  5 tn Heb “for her compassions grew warm for her son.”

[3:26]  6 tn The infinitive absolute before the negated jussive emphasizes the main verb.

[8:33]  7 tn Heb “when.” In the Hebrew text vv. 33-34 actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided into two sentences for stylistic reasons.

[8:33]  8 tn Or “are struck down before an enemy.”

[8:33]  9 tn Heb “confess [or perhaps, “praise”] your name.”

[8:33]  10 tn Heb “and they pray and ask for help.”

[14:15]  11 tn The elliptical Hebrew text reads literally “and the Lord will strike Israel as a reed sways in the water.”

[14:15]  12 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 22, 31).

[14:15]  13 tn Heb “the River.” In biblical Hebrew this is a typical reference to the Euphrates River. The name “Euphrates” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[14:15]  14 tn Heb “because they made their Asherah poles that anger the Lord”; or “their images of Asherah”; ASV, NASB “their Asherim”; NCV “they set up idols to worship Asherah.”

[14:15]  sn Asherah was a leading deity of the Canaanite pantheon, wife/sister of El and goddess of fertility. She was commonly worshiped at shrines in or near groves of evergreen trees, or, failing that, at places marked by wooden poles. These were to be burned or cut down (Deut 12:3; 16:21; Judg 6:25, 28, 30; 2 Kgs 18:4).

[16:2]  15 tn The Hebrew text has “because” at the beginning of the sentence. In the Hebrew text vv. 2-3 are one sentence comprised of a causal clause giving the reason for divine punishment (v. 2) and the main clause announcing the punishment (v. 3). The translation divides this sentence for stylistic reasons.

[16:2]  16 tn Heb “walked in the way of Jeroboam.”

[16:2]  17 tn Heb “angering me by their sins.”

[20:42]  18 tn Heb “he”; the referent (the prophet) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:42]  19 tn Heb “Because you sent away the man of my destruction [i.e., that I determined should be destroyed] from [my/your?] hand, your life will be in place of his life, and your people in place of his people.”

[21:4]  20 tn Heb “on account of the word that Naboth the Jezreelite spoke to him.”

[21:4]  21 tn Heb “I will not give to you the inheritance of my fathers.”

[21:4]  22 tn Heb “turned away his face.”

[21:29]  23 tn Or “humbles himself.” The expression occurs a second time later in this verse.

[21:29]  24 tn Heb “I will not bring the disaster during his days, [but] in the days of his son I will bring the disaster on his house.”

[22:19]  25 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Micaiah) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
