[5:15]  1 tn Heb “carriers of loads.”

[5:15]  2 tn Heb “cutters” (probably of stones).

[10:1]  3 tn Heb “the report about Solomon.” The Hebrew text also has, “to the name of the Lord,” which fits very awkwardly in the sentence. If retained, perhaps it should be translated, “because of the reputation of the Lord.” The phrase, which is omitted in the parallel passage in 2 Chr 9:1, may be an addition based on the queen’s declaration of praise to the Lord in v. 9.

[10:1]  4 tn Or “test.”

[10:1]  5 tn Or “riddles.”

[11:3]  6 tn Heb “wives, princesses.”

[11:3]  7 sn Concubines were slave women in ancient Near Eastern societies who were the legal property of their master, but who could have legitimate sexual relations with their master. A concubine’s status was more elevated than a mere servant, but she was not free and did not have the legal rights of a free wife. The children of a concubine could, in some instances, become equal heirs with the children of the free wife. The usage in the present passage suggests that after the period of the Judges concubines may have become more of a royal prerogative (cf. also 2 Sam 21:10-14).

[11:3]  8 tn Heb “his wives bent his heart.”

[11:6]  9 tn Heb “in the eyes of the Lord.”

[11:6]  10 tn The idiomatic statement reads in Hebrew, “he did not fill up after.”

[11:19]  11 tn Heb “and Hadad found great favor in the eyes of Pharaoh.”

[11:19]  12 tn Heb “and he gave to him a wife, the sister of his wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.”

[15:4]  13 tn Heb “gave him a lamp.”

[15:4]  14 tc The Old Greek has the plural “his sons.”

[15:4]  15 tn Heb “by raising up his son after him.”

[15:4]  16 tn Heb “and by causing Jerusalem to stand firm.”

[15:34]  17 tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

[15:34]  18 tn Heb “and he walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin which he made Israel sin.”

[16:25]  19 tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

[16:30]  20 tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

[18:14]  21 tn Heb “Look, Elijah”; or “Elijah is here.”

[18:41]  22 tn Heb “for [there is] the sound of the roar of the rain.”
