Eli’s Sons Misuse Their Sacred Office

2:12 The sons of Eli were wicked men. ¹  They did not recognize the Lord’s authority. ² 

1 Samuel 8:21

8:21 So Samuel listened to everything the people said and then reported it to the Lord. ³ 

1 Samuel 9:15

9:15 Now the day before Saul arrived, the Lord had told ⁴  Samuel:

18:14 Now David achieved success in all he did, ⁵  for the Lord was with him.

1 Samuel 23:21

23:21 Saul replied, “May you be blessed by the Lord, for you have had compassion on me.

[2:12]  ¹ tn Heb “sons of worthlessness.”

[2:12]  ² tn Heb “they did not know the Lord.” The verb here has the semantic nuance “recognize the authority of.” Eli’s sons obviously knew who the Lord was; they served in his sanctuary. But they did not recognize his moral authority.

[8:21]  ³ tn Heb “and Samuel heard all the words of the people and he spoke them into the ears of the Lord.”

[9:15]  ⁴ tn Heb “uncovered the ear of.”

[18:14]  ⁵ tn Heb “in all his ways.”
