[4:41]  1 tn The Hebrew text reads “their tents,” apparently referring to those of the Hamites mentioned at the end of v. 40. Some prefer to emend the text to read, “the tents of Ham.”

[4:41]  2 tn Heb “and they lived in place of them.”

[6:49]  3 tn Heb “for all the work of the holy of holies.”

[6:49]  4 tn Heb “making atonement for Israel according to all which Moses the servant of God commanded.”

[11:18]  5 tn Heb “the three,” referring to the three elite warriors mentioned in v. 12.

[12:8]  6 tn Heb “warriors, men of battle for war, prepared with shield and spear, and [like] the face of a lion were their faces, and like gazelles on the hills to hurry.”

[14:11]  7 tn Heb “by my hand.”

[14:11]  8 sn The name Baal Perazim means “Lord of outbursts” in Hebrew.

[19:6]  9 tn Heb “that they were a stench [i.e., disgusting] with David.”

[19:6]  10 tn The Hebrew word כִּכַּר (kikar, “circle”) refers generally to something that is round. When used of metals it can refer to a disk-shaped weight made of the metal or, by extension, to a standard unit of weight. According to the older (Babylonian) standard the “talent” weighed 130 lbs. (58.9 kg), but later this was lowered to 108.3 lbs. (49.1 kg). More recent research suggests the “light” standard talent was 67.3 lbs. (30.6 kg). Using this as the standard for calculation, the Ammonites hired chariots and charioteers for about 33.7 tons (30,600 kg) of silver.

[19:6]  11 tn The parallel text of 2 Sam 10:6 has “Aram Beth Rehob and Aram Zobah.”

[19:18]  12 tc The parallel text of 2 Sam 10:18 has “seven hundred.”

[19:18]  13 tn The parallel text of 2 Sam 10:18 has the variant spelling “Shobach.”

[21:16]  14 tn Heb “and David and the elders, covered with sackcloth, fell on their faces.”

[22:8]  15 tn Heb “and the word of the Lord was [i.e., came] to me saying.”

[22:8]  16 tn Heb “for my name.”

[25:1]  17 tn Heb “David and the officers of the army set apart for service the sons of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, the ones prophesying by harps, by lyres, and by cymbals.”

[25:1]  18 tn Heb “and their number was, the men of work for their service.”

[25:9]  19 tc Heb “The first lot went to Asaph, to Joseph.” Apparently the recurring formula, “and his sons and his relatives, twelve” has been accidentally omitted from the Hebrew text at this point (see vv. 10-31; the formula is slightly different in v. 9b). If the number “twelve” is not supplied here, the total comes to only 276, not the 288 required by v. 7.

[29:14]  20 tn Heb “that we should retain strength to contribute like this.”

[29:14]  21 tn Heb “and from you we have given to you.”
