Forced Absence from Thessalonica

2:17 But when we were separated from you, brothers and sisters, ¹  for a short time (in presence, not in affection) ²  we became all the more fervent in our great desire ³  to see you in person. ⁴

4:16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the archangel, ⁵  and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

[2:17]  ³ tn Grk “with great desire.”

[2:17]  ⁴ tn Grk “to see your face.”

[4:16]  ⁵ tn Neither noun in this phrase (ἐν φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου, ejn fwnh ajrcangelou, “with the voice of the archangel”) has the article in keeping with Apollonius’ Canon. Since ἀρχάγγελος (ajrcangelo") is most likely monadic, both nouns are translated as definite in keeping with Apollonius’ Corollary (see ExSyn 250-51).
