2:10 especially those who indulge their fleshly desires ¹  and who despise authority.

1:16 These people are grumblers and ⁸  fault-finders who go ⁹  wherever their desires lead them, ¹⁰  and they give bombastic speeches, ¹¹  enchanting folks ¹²  for their own gain. ¹³

[2:10]  ¹ tn Grk “those who go after the flesh in [its] lust.”

[2:10]  ² tn There is no “and” in Greek; it is supplied for the sake of English convention.

[2:10]  ³ tn The translation takes βλασφημοῦντες (blasfhmounte") as an adverbial participle of purpose, as most translations do. However, it is also possible to see this temporally (thus, “they do not tremble when they blaspheme”).

[2:10]  ⁴ tn Δόξας (doxas) almost certainly refers to angelic beings rather than mere human authorities, though it is difficult to tell whether good or bad angels are in view. Verse 11 seems to suggest that wicked angels is what the author intends.

[2:2]  ⁵ tn “Debauched lifestyles” is literally “licentiousnesses,” “sensualities,” “debaucheries.”

[2:2]  ⁶ tn Grk “because of whom,” introducing a subordinate clause to the first part of the verse.

[2:2]  ⁷ tn Or “blasphemed,” “reviled,” “treated with contempt.”

[1:16]  ⁸ tn “And” is not in Greek, but is supplied for the sake of English style.

[1:16]  ⁹ tn Or “going.” Though the participle is anarthrous, so also is the subject. Thus, the participle could be either adverbial or adjectival.

[1:16]  ¹⁰ tn Grk “(who go/going) according to their own lusts.”

[1:16]  ¹¹ tn Grk “and their mouth speaks bombastic things.”

[1:16]  sn They give bombastic speeches. The idiom of opening one’s mouth in the NT often implied a public oration from a teacher or one in authority. Cf. Matt 5:2; Luke 4:22; Acts 1:16; 3:18; 10:34; Eph 6:19; Rev 13:5-6.

[1:16]  ¹² sn Enchanting folks (Grk “awing faces”) refers to the fact that the speeches of these false teachers are powerful and seductive.

[1:16]  ¹³ tn Or “to their own advantage.”

[1:18]  ¹⁴ tn Grk “be.”

[1:18]  ¹⁵ tn Grk “going according to their own desires of ungodliness.”

[1:18]  sn Jude cites 2 Pet 3:3, changing a few of the words among other things, cleaning up the syntax, conforming it to Hellenistic style.
