Elisha Demonstrates His Authority

2:19 The men of the city said to Elisha, “Look, the city has a good location, as our ¹  master can see. But the water is bad and the land doesn’t produce crops.” ²

4:16 He said, “About this time next year ³  you will be holding a son.” She said, “No, my master! O prophet, do not lie to your servant!”

5:3 She told her mistress, “If only my master were in the presence of the prophet who is in Samaria! ⁴  Then he would cure him of his skin disease.”

6:5 As one of them was felling a log, the ax head ⁵  dropped into the water. He shouted, “Oh no, ⁶  my master! It was borrowed!”

6:26 While the king of Israel was passing by on the city wall, a woman shouted to him, “Help us, my master, O king!”

18:23 Now make a deal ⁷  with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, provided you can find enough riders for them. 18:24 Certainly you will not refuse one of my master’s minor officials and trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen. ⁸

His reasoning seems to be as follows: “In your weakened condition you obviously need military strength. Agree to the king’s terms and I will personally give you more horses than you are capable of outfitting. If I, a mere minor official, am capable of giving you such military might, just think what power the king has. There is no way the Egyptians can match our strength. It makes much better sense to deal with us.”
