2 Samuel 7:7

7:7 Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say ¹  to any of the leaders ²  whom I appointed to care for ³  my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?”’

4:20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, ⁴  and you people ⁵  say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” ⁶  4:21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, ⁷  a time ⁸  is coming when you will worship ⁹  the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

7:49 ‘Heaven is my throne,

and earth is the footstool for my feet.

What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,

[7:7]  ¹ tn Heb “Did I speak a word?” In the Hebrew text the statement is phrased as a rhetorical question.

[7:7]  ² tn Heb “tribes” (so KJV, NASB, NCV), but the parallel passage in 1 Chr 17:6 has “judges.”

[7:7]  ³ tn Heb “whom I commanded to shepherd” (so NIV, NRSV).

[4:20]  ⁴ sn This mountain refers to Mount Gerizim, where the Samaritan shrine was located.

[4:20]  ⁵ tn The word “people” is not in the Greek text, but is supplied to indicate that the Greek verb translated “say” is second person plural and thus refers to more than Jesus alone.

[7:49]  ¹⁰ sn What kind…resting place? The rhetorical questions suggest mere human beings cannot build a house to contain God.
