9:7 David said to him, “Don’t be afraid, because I will certainly extend kindness to you for the sake of Jonathan your father. You will be a regular guest at my table.” ¹

10:6 When the Ammonites realized that David was disgusted with them, ²  they ³  sent and hired 20,000 foot soldiers from Aram Beth Rehob and Aram Zobah, ⁴  in addition to 1,000 men from the king of Maacah and 12,000 men from Ish-tob. ⁵ 

2 Samuel 11:4

11:4 David sent some messengers to get her. ⁶  She came to him and he had sexual relations with her. ⁷  (Now at that time she was in the process of purifying herself from her menstrual uncleanness.) ⁸  Then she returned to her home.

11:13 Then David summoned him. He ate and drank with him, and got him drunk. But in the evening he went out to sleep on his bed with the servants of his lord; he did not go down to his own house.

15:2 Now Absalom used to get up early and stand beside the road that led to the city gate. Whenever anyone came by who had a complaint to bring to the king for arbitration, Absalom would call out to him, “What city are you from?” The person would answer, “I, your servant, ¹¹  am from one of the tribes of Israel.”

[11:4]  ⁷ tn Heb “he lay with her” (so NASB, NRSV); TEV “he made love to her”; NIV, CEV, NLT “he slept with her.”

[11:4]  ⁸ tn The parenthetical disjunctive clause further heightens the tension by letting the reader know that Bathsheba, having just completed her menstrual cycle, is ripe for conception. See P. K. McCarter, II Samuel (AB), 286. Since she just had her period, it will also be obvious to those close to the scene that Uriah, who has been away fighting, cannot be the father of the child.

[14:2]  ⁹ tn The Hebrew Hitpael verbal form here indicates pretended rather than genuine action.

[14:2]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “these many days.”

[15:2]  ¹¹ tn Heb “your servant.” So also in vv. 8, 15, 21.
