2 Tawarikh 36:17

Konteks
36:17 He brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who slaughtered 1  their young men in their temple. 2  He did not spare 3  young men or women, or even the old and aging. God 4  handed everyone over to him.

Yeremia 15:5

Konteks

15:5 The Lord cried out, 5

“Who in the world 6  will have pity on you, Jerusalem?

Who will grieve over you?

Who will stop long enough 7

to inquire about how you are doing? 8

Yehezkiel 7:9

Konteks
7:9 My eye will not pity you; I will not spare 9  you. For your behavior I will hold you accountable, 10  and you will suffer the consequences of your abominable practices. Then you will know that it is I, the Lord, who is striking you. 11

Habakuk 1:6

Konteks

1:6 Look, I am about to empower 12  the Babylonians,

that ruthless 13  and greedy 14  nation.

They sweep across the surface 15  of the earth,

seizing dwelling places that do not belong to them.

[36:17]  1 tn Heb “killed with the sword.”

[36:17]  2 tn Heb “in the house of their sanctuary.”

[36:17]  3 tn Or “show compassion to.”

[36:17]  4 tn Heb “he”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[15:5]  5 tn The words “The Lord cried out” are not in the text. However, they are necessary to show the shift in address between speaking to Jeremiah in vv. 1-4 about the people and addressing Jerusalem in vv. 5-6 and the shift back to the address to Jeremiah in vv. 7-9. The words “oracle of the Lord” are, moreover, found at the beginning of v. 6.

[15:5]  6 tn The words, “in the world” are not in the text but are the translator’s way of trying to indicate that this rhetorical question expects a negative answer.

[15:5]  7 tn Heb “turn aside.”

[15:5]  8 tn Or “about your well-being”; Heb “about your welfare” (שָׁלוֹם, shalom).

[7:9]  9 tn The meaning of the Hebrew term is primarily emotional: “to pity,” which in context implies an action, as in being moved by pity in order to spare them from the horror of their punishment.

[7:9]  10 tn Heb “According to your behavior I will place on you.”

[7:9]  11 tn The MT lacks “you.” It has been added for clarification.

[1:6]  12 tn Heb “raise up” (so KJV, ASV).

[1:6]  13 tn Heb “bitter.” Other translation options for this word in this context include “fierce” (NASB, NRSV); “savage” (NEB); or “grim.”

[1:6]  14 tn Heb “hasty, quick.” Some translate here “impetuous” (so NEB, NASB, NIV, NRSV) or “rash,” but in this context greed may very well be the idea. The Babylonians move quickly and recklessly ahead in their greedy quest to expand their empire.

[1:6]  15 tn Heb “the open spaces.”
