Encouragement in Persecution

1:5 This is evidence of God’s righteous judgment, to make you worthy ¹  of the kingdom of God, for which in fact you are suffering.

Joshua Sends Spies into the Land

2:1 Joshua son of Nun sent two spies out from Shittim secretly and instructed them: ⁵  “Find out what you can about the land, especially Jericho.” ⁶  They stopped at the house of a prostitute named Rahab and spent the night there. ⁷

[1:5]  ¹ tn Grk “so that you may be made worthy.” The passive infinitive καταξιωθῆναι (kataxiwqhnai) has been translated as an active construction in English for stylistic reasons.

[2:12]  ² tn Heb “Now, swear to me by the Lord.”

[2:12]  sn To swear an oath in the Lord’s name would make the Lord the witness and guarantor of the promise attached to the oath. If the person making the oath should go back on the promise, the Lord would judge him for breaking the contract.

[2:12]  ³ tn Heb “with the house of my father.”

[2:12]  ⁴ tn Heb “true sign,” that is, “an inviolable token or pledge.”

[2:1]  ⁵ tn Heb “Joshua, son of Nun, sent from Shittim two men, spies, secretly, saying.”

[2:1]  ⁶ tn Heb “go, see the land, and Jericho.”

[17:18]  ⁹ tn Heb “and your brothers, observe with respect to welfare.”

[17:18]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “and their pledge take.” This probably refers to some type of confirmation that the goods arrived safely. See R. W. Klein, 1 Samuel (WBC), 177. Cf. NIV “bring back some assurance”; NCV “some proof to show me they are all right”; NLT “bring me back a letter from them.”
