[1:5]  1 tn Grk “so that you may be made worthy.” The passive infinitive καταξιωθῆναι (kataxiwqhnai) has been translated as an active construction in English for stylistic reasons.

[2:12]  2 tn Heb “Now, swear to me by the Lord.”

[2:12]  sn To swear an oath in the Lord’s name would make the Lord the witness and guarantor of the promise attached to the oath. If the person making the oath should go back on the promise, the Lord would judge him for breaking the contract.

[2:12]  3 tn Heb “with the house of my father.”

[2:12]  4 tn Heb “true sign,” that is, “an inviolable token or pledge.”

[2:1]  5 tn Heb “Joshua, son of Nun, sent from Shittim two men, spies, secretly, saying.”

[2:1]  6 tn Heb “go, see the land, and Jericho.”

[2:1]  map For location see Map5 B2; Map6 E1; Map7 E1; Map8 E3; Map10 A2; Map11 A1.

[2:1]  7 tn Heb “they went and entered the house of a woman, a prostitute, and her name was Rahab, and they slept there.”

[17:18]  8 tn Heb “officer of the thousand.”

[17:18]  9 tn Heb “and your brothers, observe with respect to welfare.”

[17:18]  10 tn Heb “and their pledge take.” This probably refers to some type of confirmation that the goods arrived safely. See R. W. Klein, 1 Samuel (WBC), 177. Cf. NIV “bring back some assurance”; NCV “some proof to show me they are all right”; NLT “bring me back a letter from them.”
