Daniel 1:11-12

1:11 Daniel then spoke to the warden ¹  whom the overseer of the court officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 1:12 “Please test your servants for ten days by providing us with some vegetables to eat and water to drink.

Daniel 1:16

1:16 So the warden removed the delicacies and the wine ²  from their diet ³  and gave them a diet of vegetables instead.

11:23 After ¹⁰  entering into an alliance with him, he will behave treacherously; he will ascend to power with only a small force. ¹¹ 

Daniel 11:26

11:26 Those who share the king’s fine food will attempt to destroy him, and his army will be swept away; ¹²  many will be killed in battle.

Daniel 12:8

12:8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I said, “Sir, ¹³  what will happen after these things?”

Others identify Darius with a governor of Babylon known from extra-biblical records as Gubaru, or with Cambyses, son of Cyrus. Many scholars maintain that the reference is historically inaccurate.

[10:21]  ⁶ tn Heb “a book of truth.” Several English versions treat this as a title of some sort (cf. NIV, NCV, TEV, CEV, NLT), although the NAB’s rendering “the truthful book” regards “truth” as an attributive adjective, as does the present translation.

[10:21]  ⁸ tn The pronoun is plural in Hebrew, suggesting that Michael is the angelic prince of Daniel and his people.

[11:11]  ⁹ sn This king of the south refers to Ptolemy IV Philopator (ca. 221-204 B.C.).

[11:23]  ¹⁰ tn The preposition מִן (min) is probably temporal here (so BDB 583 s.v. 7.c; cf. KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV), although it could also be understood here as indicating means (so J. Goldingay, Daniel [WBC], 279, n. 23a; cf. TEV, NLT).

[11:23]  ¹¹ tn Heb “nation.”

[11:26]  ¹² tc The present translation reads יִשָׁטֵף (yishatef, passive) rather than the MT יִשְׁטוֹף (yishtof, active).

[12:8]  ¹³ tn Heb “my lord,” a title of polite address.
