[1:11]  1 sn Having failed to convince the overseer, Daniel sought the favor of the warden whom the overseer had appointed to care for the young men.

[8:9]  2 sn This small horn is Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who controlled the Seleucid kingdom from ca. 175-164 B.C. Antiochus was extremely hostile toward the Jews and persecuted them mercilessly.

[8:9]  3 sn The expression the beautiful land (Heb. הַצֶּבִי [hatsÿvi] = “the beauty”) is a cryptic reference to the land of Israel. Cf. 11:16, 41, where it is preceded by the word אֶרֶץ (’erets, “land”).

[9:17]  4 tn Heb “hear.” Here the verb refers to hearing favorably, accepting the prayer and responding positively.

[9:17]  5 tn Heb “let your face shine.” This idiom pictures God smiling in favor. See Pss 31:16; 67:1; 80:3, 7, 19.

[9:17]  6 tn Heb “for the sake of my Lord.” Theodotion has “for your sake.” Cf. v. 19.

[9:19]  7 tn Heb “for your name is called over your city and your people.” See the note on this expression in v 18.

[10:3]  8 tn Heb “mouth.”

[10:3]  9 sn Anointing oneself with oil (usually olive oil) was a common OT practice due to the severity of the Middle Eastern sun (cf. Ps 121:6). It was also associated with rejoicing (e.g., Prov 27:9) and was therefore usually not practiced during a period of mourning.

[10:19]  10 tn Heb “treasured man.”

[10:19]  11 tn Heb “my lord may speak.”

[11:7]  12 sn The reference is to the king of Egypt.

[11:7]  13 tn Heb “the stock of her roots.”

[11:7]  sn The reference to one from her family line is probably to Berenice’s brother, Ptolemy III Euergetes (ca. 246-221 B.C.).

[11:7]  14 tn Heb “will deal with them and prevail.”
