1:8 But Daniel made up his mind 1  that he would not defile 2  himself with the royal delicacies or the royal wine. 3  He therefore asked the overseer of the court officials for permission not to defile himself.

[1:8]  sn Various reasons have been suggested as to why such food would defile Daniel. Perhaps it had to do with violations of Mosaic law with regard to unclean foods, or perhaps it had to do with such food having been offered to idols. Daniel’s practice in this regard is strikingly different from that of Esther, who was able successfully to conceal her Jewish identity.

Many modern scholars, however, understand the reference to have a corporate identity. In this view, the “son of man” is to be equated with the “holy ones” (vv. 18, 21, 22, 25) or the “people of the holy ones” (v. 27) and understood as a reference to the Jewish people. Others understand Daniel’s reference to be to the angel Michael.

[7:13]  12 tn Aram “they brought him near.”

[8:11]  13 sn The prince of the army may refer to God (cf. “whose sanctuary” later in the verse) or to the angel Michael (cf. 12:1).

[8:11]  14 tn Or perhaps “and by him,” referring to Antiochus rather than to God.

[8:11]  15 sn Here the sanctuary is a reference to the temple of God in Jerusalem.

[11:37]  16 tn Heb “consider.”

[11:37]  17 tn Heb “[the one] desired by women.” The referent has been specified in the translation for clarity.
