Kisah Para Rasul 13:8-9

13:8 But the magician Elymas 2  (for that is the way his name is translated) 3  opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul 4  away from the faith. 13:9 But Saul (also known as Paul), 5  filled with the Holy Spirit, 6  stared straight 7  at him

Kisah Para Rasul 13:2

[9:1]  1 tn Heb “fortified to the heavens” (so NRSV); NLT “cities with walls that reach to the sky.” This is hyperbole.

[13:8]  2 tn On the debate over what the name “Elymas” means, see BDAG 320 s.v. ᾿Ελύμας. The magician’s behavior is more directly opposed to the faith than Simon Magus’ was.

[13:8]  3 sn A parenthetical note by the author.

[13:8]  4 sn The proconsul was the Roman official who ruled over a province traditionally under the control of the Roman senate.

[13:9]  5 sn A parenthetical note by the author.

[13:9]  6 sn This qualifying clause in the narrative indicates who represented God in the dispute.

[13:9]  7 tn Or “gazed intently.”

[13:2]  8 tn This term is frequently used in the LXX of the service performed by priests and Levites in the tabernacle (Exod 28:35, 43; 29:30; 30:20; 35:19; 39:26; Num 1:50; 3:6, 31) and the temple (2 Chr 31:2; 35:3; Joel 1:9, 13; 2:17, and many more examples). According to BDAG 591 s.v. λειτουργέω 1.b it is used “of other expression of religious devotion.” Since the previous verse described the prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch, it is probable that the term here describes two of them (Barnabas and Saul) as they were serving in that capacity. Since they were not in Jerusalem where the temple was located, general religious service is referred to here.

[13:2]  9 tn Or “Appoint.”

[6:1]  10 tn Grk “these.” The translation uses “those” for stylistic reasons.

[6:1]  11 tn Grk “were multiplying.”

[6:1]  12 tn Grk “the Hellenists,” but this descriptive term is largely unknown to the modern English reader. The translation “Greek-speaking Jews” attempts to convey something of who these were, but it was more than a matter of language spoken; it involved a degree of adoption of Greek culture as well.

[6:1]  sn The Greek-speaking Jews were the Hellenists, Jews who to a greater or lesser extent had adopted Greek thought, customs, and lifestyle, as well as the Greek language. The city of Alexandria in Egypt was a focal point for them, but they were scattered throughout the Roman Empire.

[6:1]  13 tn Grk “against the Hebrews,” but as with “Hellenists” this needs further explanation for the modern reader.

[6:1]  14 sn The care of widows is a major biblical theme: Deut 10:18; 16:11, 14; 24:17, 19-21; 26:12-13; 27:19; Isa 1:17-23; Jer 7:6; Mal 3:5.

[6:1]  15 tn Or “neglected.”

[6:1]  16 tn Grk “in the daily serving.”

[6:1]  sn The daily distribution of food. The early church saw it as a responsibility to meet the basic needs of people in their group.
