3:1 These were the nations the Lord permitted to remain so he could use them to test Israel – he wanted to test all those who had not experienced battle against the Canaanites. ¹

Gideon Meets Some Visitors

6:11 The Lord’s angelic messenger ²  came and sat down under the oak tree in Ophrah owned by Joash the Abiezrite. He arrived while Joash’s son Gideon ³  was threshing ⁴  wheat in a winepress ⁵  so he could hide it from the Midianites. ⁶

7:2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to hand Midian over to you. ⁷  Israel might brag, ⁸  ‘Our own strength has delivered us.’ ⁹

9:7 When Jotham heard the news, ¹⁰  he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim. He spoke loudly to the people below, ¹¹  “Listen to me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may listen to you!

16:25 When they really started celebrating, ¹²  they said, “Call for Samson so he can entertain us!” So they summoned Samson from the prison and he entertained them. ¹³  They made him stand between two pillars.

19:9 When the man got ready to leave ¹⁴  with his concubine and his servant, ¹⁵  his father-in-law, the girl’s father, said to him, “Look! The day is almost over! ¹⁶  Stay another night! Since the day is over, ¹⁷  stay another night here and have a good time. You can get up early tomorrow and start your trip home.” ¹⁸

21:16 The leaders ¹⁹  of the assembly said, “How can we find wives for those who are left? ²⁰  After all, the Benjaminite women have been wiped out.

[6:11]  sn The Lord’s angelic messenger is also mentioned in Judg 2:1.

[6:11]  ³ tn Heb “Now Gideon his son…” The Hebrew circumstantial clause (note the pattern vav [ו] + subject + predicate) breaks the narrative sequence and indicates that the angel’s arrival coincided with Gideon’s threshing.

[6:11]  ⁴ tn Heb “beating out.”

[6:11]  ⁵ sn Threshing wheat in a winepress. One would normally thresh wheat at the threshing floor outside the city. Animals and a threshing sledge would be employed.
