Yesaya 31:1

Konteks
Egypt Will Disappoint

31:1 Those who go down to Egypt for help are as good as dead, 1

those who rely on war horses,

and trust in Egypt’s many chariots 2

and in their many, many horsemen. 3

But they do not rely on the Holy One of Israel 4

and do not seek help from the Lord.

Ulangan 17:16

17:16 Moreover, he must not accumulate horses for himself or allow the people to return to Egypt to do so, 5  for the Lord has said you must never again return that way.

Ulangan 17:1

Konteks
17:1 You must not sacrifice to him 6  a bull or sheep that has a blemish or any other defect, because that is considered offensive 7  to the Lord your God.

and the rulers assembled together,

against the Lord and against his 9  Christ. 10

[31:1]  1 tn Heb “Woe [to] those who go down to Egypt for help.”

[31:1]  2 tn Heb “and trust in chariots for they are many.”

[31:1]  3 tn Heb “and in horsemen for they are very strong [or “numerous”].”

[31:1]  4 sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.

[17:16]  5 tn Heb “in order to multiply horses.” The translation uses “do so” in place of “multiply horses” to avoid redundancy (cf. NAB, NIV).

[17:1]  6 tn Heb “to the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 16:1.

[17:1]  7 tn The Hebrew word תּוֹעֵבָה (toevah, “an abomination”; cf. NAB) describes persons, things, or practices offensive to ritual or moral order. See M. Grisanti, NIDOTTE 4:314-18; see also the note on the word “abhorrent” in Deut 7:25.

[4:26]  8 tn Traditionally, “The kings of the earth took their stand.”

[4:26]  9 tn Or “Messiah”; both “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew and Aramaic) mean “one who has been anointed.”

[4:26]  sn See the note on Christ in 2:31.

[4:26]  10 sn A quotation from Ps 2:1-2.

[10:26]  11 tn BDAG 271 s.v. ἐγείρω 3 has “raise, help to rise….Stretched out Ac 10:26.”

[10:26]  12 tn Although it is certainly true that Peter was a “man,” here ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo") has been translated as “mere mortal” because the emphasis in context is not on Peter’s maleness, but his humanity. Contrary to what Cornelius thought, Peter was not a god or an angelic being, but a mere mortal.

[20:7]  13 tn Heb “these in chariots and these in horses.” No verb appears; perhaps the verb “invoke” is to be supplied from the following line. In this case the idea would be that some “invoke” (i.e., trust in) their military might for victory (cf. NEB “boast”; NIV “trust”; NRSV “take pride”). Verse 8 suggests that the “some/others” mentioned here are the nation’s enemies.

[20:7]  14 tn The grammatical construction (conjunction + pronominal subject) highlights the contrast between God’s faithful people and the others mentioned in the previous line.

[20:7]  15 tn Heb “we invoke the name of.” The Hiphil of זָכַר (zakhar), when combined with the phrase “in the name,” means “to invoke” (see Josh 23:7; Isa 48:1; Amos 6:10). By invoking the Lord’s name in prayer, the people demonstrate their trust in him.

[14:3]  16 tn Heb “For the orphan is shown compassion by you.” The present translation takes “orphan” as a figurative reference to Israel, which is specified in the translation for clarity.
