Yeremia 31:16

31:16 The Lord says to her, ¹ 

“Stop crying! Do not shed any more tears! ² 

For your heartfelt repentance ³  will be rewarded.

Your children will return from the land of the enemy.

[31:16]  ¹ tn The words “to her” are not in the text but are implicit from the context. They are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[31:16]  ² tn Heb “Refrain your voice from crying and your eyes from tears.”

[31:16]  ³ tn Heb “your work.” Contextually her “work” refers to her weeping and refusing to be comforted, that is, signs of genuine repentance (v. 15).

[31:16]  ⁴ tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

[7:13]  ⁵ tn Grk “And seeing her, the Lord.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style. The participle ἰδών (idwn) has been taken temporally.

[7:13]  ⁶ sn He had compassion. It is unusual for Luke to note such emotion by Jesus, though the other Synoptics tend to mention it (Matt 14:14; Mark 6:34; Matt 15:32; Mark 8:2).

[7:13]  ⁷ tn The verb κλαίω (klaiw) denotes the loud wailing or lamenting typical of 1st century Jewish mourning.

[8:52]  ⁸ sn This group probably includes outside or even professional mourners, not just family, because a large group seems to be present.

[8:52]  ⁹ tn Grk “beating the breasts” (in mourning); see L&N 52.1.

[23:28]  ¹⁰ sn The title Daughters of Jerusalem portrays these women mourning as representatives of the nation.

[23:28]  ¹¹ sn Do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves. Judgment now comes on the nation (see Luke 19:41-44) for this judgment of Jesus. Ironically, they mourn the wrong person – they should be mourning for themselves.

[20:13]  ¹² tn The conjunction καί (kai, “and”) has not been translated here.

[20:13]  ¹³ sn Woman was a polite form of address (see BDAG 208-9 s.v. γυνή 1), similar to “Madam” or “Ma’am” used in English in different regions. This occurs again in v. 15.
