Three Special Visitors

18:1 The Lord appeared to Abraham ¹  by the oaks ²  of Mamre while ³  he was sitting at the entrance ⁴  to his tent during the hottest time of the day.

43:25 They got their gifts ready for Joseph’s arrival ⁵  at noon, for they had heard ⁶  that they were to have a meal ⁷  there.

[18:1]  ¹ tn Heb “him”; the referent (Abraham) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[18:1]  ² tn Or “terebinths.”

[18:1]  ³ tn The disjunctive clause here is circumstantial to the main clause.

[18:1]  ⁴ tn The Hebrew noun translated “entrance” is an adverbial accusative of place.

[43:25]  ⁵ tn The construction uses the infinitive construct after the preposition, followed by the subjective genitive.

[43:25]  ⁶ tn The action precedes the action of preparing the gift, and so must be translated as past perfect.

[43:25]  ⁷ tn Heb “eat bread.” The imperfect verbal form is used here as a historic future (future from the perspective of the past).
