19:37 The older daughter ¹  gave birth to a son and named him Moab. ²  He is the ancestor of the Moabites of today.

Bilangan 21:29

21:29 Woe to you, Moab.

You are ruined, O people of Chemosh! ³ 

He has made his sons fugitives,

and his daughters the prisoners of King Sihon of the Amorites.

[19:37]  ² sn The meaning of the name Moab is not certain. The name sounds like the Hebrew phrase “from our father” (מֵאָבִינוּ, me’avinu) which the daughters used twice (vv. 32, 34). This account is probably included in the narrative in order to portray the Moabites, who later became enemies of God’s people, in a negative light.

[21:29]  ³ sn The note of holy war emerges here as the victory is a victory over the local gods as well as over the people.
