33:2 He put the servants and their children in front, with Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph behind them. ¹

42:24 He turned away from them and wept. When he turned around and spoke to them again, ²  he had Simeon taken ³  from them and tied up ⁴  before their eyes.

[33:2]  ¹ sn This kind of ranking according to favoritism no doubt fed the jealousy over Joseph that later becomes an important element in the narrative. It must have been painful to the family to see that they were expendable.

[42:24]  ² tn Heb “and he turned to them and spoke to them.”

[42:24]  ³ tn Heb “took Simeon.” This was probably done at Joseph’s command, however; the grand vizier of Egypt would not have personally seized a prisoner.

[42:24]  ⁴ tn Heb “and he bound him.” See the note on the preceding verb “taken.”
