[42:20]  1 tn The imperfect here has an injunctive force.

[42:20]  2 tn After the injunctive imperfect, this imperfect with vav indicates purpose or result.

[42:20]  3 tn The Niphal form of the verb has the sense of “to be faithful; to be sure; to be reliable.” Joseph will test his brothers to see if their words are true.

[42:20]  4 tn Heb “and they did so.”

[47:6]  5 tn Heb “men of skill.”

[47:6]  6 tn Heb “make them rulers.”

[47:6]  sn Put them in charge of my livestock. Pharaoh is, in effect, offering Joseph’s brothers jobs as royal keepers of livestock, a position mentioned often in Egyptian inscriptions, because the Pharaohs owned huge herds of cattle.

[48:22]  7 tn The pronouns translated “your” and “you” in this verse are singular in the Hebrew text.

[48:22]  8 tn The Hebrew word שְׁכֶם (shÿkhem) could be translated either as “mountain slope” or “shoulder, portion,” or even taken as the proper name “Shechem.” Jacob was giving Joseph either (1) one portion above his brothers, or (2) the mountain ridge he took from the Amorites, or (3) Shechem. The ambiguity actually allows for all three to be the referent. He could be referring to the land in Shechem he bought in Gen 33:18-19, but he mentions here that it was acquired by warfare, suggesting that the events of 34:25-29 are in view (even though at the time he denounced it, 34:30). Joseph was later buried in Shechem (Josh 24:32).

[50:17]  9 tn Heb “and Joseph wept when they spoke to him.”
