6:17 I am about to bring ¹  floodwaters ²  on the earth to destroy ³  from under the sky all the living creatures that have the breath of life in them. ⁴  Everything that is on the earth will die,

Kejadian 39:6

39:6 So Potiphar ⁵  left ⁶  everything he had in Joseph’s care; ⁷  he gave no thought ⁸  to anything except the food he ate. ⁹ 

Now Joseph was well built and good-looking. ¹⁰

39:8 But he refused, saying ¹¹  to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not give any thought ¹²  to his household with me here, ¹³  and everything that he owns he has put into my care. ¹⁴

44:29 If you take ¹⁵  this one from me too and an accident happens to him, then you will bring down my gray hair ¹⁶  in tragedy ¹⁷  to the grave.’ ¹⁸ 

[6:17]  ¹ tn The Hebrew construction uses the independent personal pronoun, followed by a suffixed form of הִנֵּה (hinneh, “look”) and the a participle used with an imminent future nuance: “As for me, look, I am going to bring.”

[6:17]  ² tn Heb “the flood, water.”

[6:17]  ³ tn The verb שָׁחָת (shakhat, “to destroy”) is repeated yet again, only now in an infinitival form expressing the purpose of the flood.

[6:17]  ⁴ tn The Hebrew construction here is different from the previous two; here it is רוּחַ חַיִּים (ruakh khayyim) rather than נֶפֶשׁ הַיָּה (nefesh khayyah) or נִשְׁמַת חַיִּים (nishmat khayyim). It refers to everything that breathes.

[39:6]  ⁵ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Potiphar) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[39:6]  ⁶ sn The Hebrew verb translated left indicates he relinquished the care of it to Joseph. This is stronger than what was said earlier. Apparently Potiphar had come to trust Joseph so much that he knew it was in better care with Joseph than with anyone else.

[39:6]  ⁷ tn Heb “hand.” This is a metonymy for being under the control or care of Joseph.

[39:6]  ⁸ tn Heb “did not know.”

[39:6]  ⁹ sn The expression except the food he ate probably refers to Potiphar’s private affairs and should not be limited literally to what he ate.

[39:6]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “handsome of form and handsome of appearance.” The same Hebrew expressions were used in Gen 29:17 for Rachel.

[39:8]  ¹¹ tn Heb “and he said.”

[39:8]  ¹² tn Heb “know.”

[39:8]  ¹³ tn The word “here” has been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[39:8]  ¹⁴ tn Heb “hand.” This is a metonymy for being under the control or care of Joseph.

[44:29]  ¹⁵ tn The construction uses a perfect verbal form with the vav consecutive to introduce the conditional clause and then another perfect verbal form with a vav consecutive to complete the sentence: “if you take…then you will bring down.”

[44:29]  ¹⁶ sn The expression bring down my gray hair is figurative, using a part for the whole – they would put Jacob in the grave. But the gray head signifies a long life of worry and trouble. See Gen 42:38.

[44:29]  ¹⁷ tn Heb “evil/calamity.” The term is different than the one used in the otherwise identical statement recorded in v. 31 (see also 42:38).

[44:29]  ¹⁸ tn Heb “to Sheol,” the dwelling place of the dead.
