The Curse of Canaan

9:18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Now Ham was the father of Canaan.) ¹ 

Kejadian 17:6

17:6 I will make you ²  extremely ³  fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you. ⁴ 

[9:18]  ¹ sn The concluding disjunctive clause is parenthetical. It anticipates the following story, which explains that the Canaanites, Ham’s descendants through Canaan, were cursed because they shared the same moral abandonment that their ancestor displayed. [17:6]  ² tn This verb starts a series of perfect verbal forms with vav (ו) consecutive to express God’s intentions.

[17:6]  ³ tn Heb “exceedingly, exceedingly.” The repetition is emphatic.

[17:6]  ⁴ tn Heb “and I will make you into nations, and kings will come out from you.”
