[9:24]  1 tn Heb “his wine,” used here by metonymy for the drunken stupor it produced.

[9:24]  3 tn The Hebrew verb עָשָׂה (’asah, “to do”) carries too general a sense to draw the conclusion that Ham had to have done more than look on his father’s nakedness and tell his brothers.

[21:1]  4 sn The Hebrew verb translated “visit” (פָּקַד, paqad ) often describes divine intervention for blessing or cursing; it indicates God’s special attention to an individual or a matter, always with respect to his people’s destiny. He may visit (that is, destroy) the Amalekites; he may visit (that is, deliver) his people in Egypt. Here he visits Sarah, to allow her to have the promised child. [21:1]  5 tn Heb “and the Lord did.” The divine name has not been repeated here in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[21:1]  6 tn Heb “spoken.”

[21:22]  7 sn God is with you. Abimelech and Phicol recognized that Abraham enjoyed special divine provision and protection.

[31:7]  8 tn This rare verb means “to make a fool of” someone. It involves deceiving someone so that their public reputation suffers (see Exod 8:25).

[39:11]  9 tn Heb “and it was about this day.”

[39:11]  10 tn Heb “the men of the house.”

[44:5]  11 tn Heb “Is this not what my master drinks from.” The word “cup” is not in the Hebrew text, but is obviously the referent of “this,” and so has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[44:5]  12 tn Heb “and he, divining, divines with it.” The infinitive absolute is emphatic, stressing the importance of the cup to Joseph.

[44:5]  13 tn Heb “you have caused to be evil what you have done.”
