[4:6]  1 sn The high priest’s family. This family controlled the high priesthood as far back as a.d. 6. Annas, Caiaphas, and Alexander were all high priests at one time (though Alexander held that office after this event).

[4:18]  2 tn Or “commanded.”

[4:18]  3 sn In the name of Jesus. Once again, the “name” reflects the person. The person of Jesus and his authority is the “troubling” topic that, as far as the Jewish leadership is concerned, needs controlling.

[7:39]  4 tn Grk “whom our.” The continuation of the sentence as a relative clause is awkward in English, so a new sentence was started in the translation at this point.

[7:39]  5 tn Or “forefathers”; Grk “fathers.”

[7:39]  6 sn To obey. Again the theme of the speech is noted. The nation disobeyed the way of God and opted for Egypt over the promised land.

[7:39]  7 sn Pushed him aside. This is the second time Moses is “pushed aside” in Stephen’s account (see v. 27).

[8:40]  8 tn Or “appeared.”

[8:40]  9 sn Azotus was a city on the coast of southern Palestine, known as Ashdod in OT times.

[8:40]  10 tn The words “the area” are not in the Greek text but are implied.

[8:40]  11 tn Or “he preached the gospel.”

[8:40]  12 tn Or “cities.”

[8:40]  13 sn Caesarea was a city on the coast of Palestine south of Mount Carmel (not Caesarea Philippi). See the note on Caesarea in Acts 10:1.

[8:40]  map For location see Map2 C1; Map4 B3; Map5 F2; Map7 A1; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[10:40]  14 tn The conjunction “but” is not in the Greek text, but the contrast is clearly implied in the context. This is technically asyndeton, or lack of a connective, in Greek.

[10:40]  15 tn Grk “and granted that he should become visible.” The literal Greek idiom is somewhat awkward in English. L&N 24.22 offers the translation “caused him to be seen” for this verse.

[13:4]  16 tn Grk “they”; the referents (Barnabas and Saul) have been specified in the translation for clarity.

[13:4]  17 sn Seleucia was the port city of Antioch in Syria.

[13:4]  18 sn Cyprus was a large island in the Mediterranean off the south coast of Asia Minor.

[23:24]  19 tn Grk “provide mounts to put Paul on.”

[23:24]  sn Mounts for Paul to ride. The fact they were riding horses indicates they wanted everyone to move as quickly as possible.

[23:24]  20 sn Felix the governor was Antonius Felix, a freedman of Antonia, mother of the Emperor Claudius. He was the brother of Pallas and became procurator of Palestine in a.d. 52/53. His administration was notorious for its corruption, cynicism, and cruelty. According to the historian Tacitus (History 5.9) Felix “reveled in cruelty and lust, and wielded the power of a king with the mind of a slave.”

[23:24]  21 tn Grk “Felix the procurator.” The official Roman title has been translated as “governor” (BDAG 433 s.v. ἡγεμών 2).
