5:26 Then the commander ¹  of the temple guard ²  went with the officers ³  and brought the apostles ⁴  without the use of force ⁵  (for they were afraid of being stoned by the people). ⁶

13:5 When ⁷  they arrived ⁸  in Salamis, ⁹  they began to proclaim ¹⁰  the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. ¹¹  (Now they also had John ¹²  as their assistant.) ¹³ 

[5:26]  ¹ tn Or “captain.”

[5:26]  ² tn Grk “the official [of the temple],” a title for the commander of the Jewish soldiers guarding the temple (thus the translation, “the commander of the temple guard”). See L&N 37.91.

[5:26]  ³ tn The Greek term ὑπηρέτης (Juphreth") generally means “servant,” but in the NT is used for many different types of servants. See the note on the word “officers” in v. 22.

[5:26]  ⁴ tn Grk “brought them”; the referent (the apostles) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[5:26]  ⁵ tn Or “without violence.” It is clear, as well, that the apostles did not resist arrest.

[5:26]  ⁶ tn Grk “for they feared lest they be stoned by the people.” The translation uses a less awkward English equivalent. This is an explanatory note by the author.

[13:5]  ⁷ tn Grk “And when.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

[13:5]  ⁸ tn The participle γενόμενοι (genomenoi) is taken temporally.

[13:5]  ⁹ sn Salamis was a city on the southeastern coast of the island of Cyprus. This was a commercial center and a center of Judaism.

[13:5]  ¹⁰ tn The imperfect verb κατήγγελλον (kathngellon) has been translated as an ingressive imperfect.

[13:5]  ¹¹ sn See the note on synagogue in 6:9.

[13:5]  ¹² sn John refers here to John Mark (see Acts 12:25).

[13:5]  ¹³ tn The word ὑπηρέτης (Juphreth") usually has the meaning “servant,” but it is doubtful John Mark fulfilled that capacity for Barnabas and Saul. He was more likely an apprentice or assistant to them.

[13:5]  sn This is a parenthetical note by the author.
