23:27 “The ¹  tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. ²  It is to be a holy assembly for you, and you must humble yourselves ³  and present a gift to the Lord. 23:28 You must not do any work on this particular day, ⁴  because it is a day of atonement to make atonement for yourselves ⁵  before the Lord your God. 23:29 Indeed, ⁶  any person who does not behave with humility on this particular day will be cut off from his people. ⁷  23:30 As for any person ⁸  who does any work on this particular day, I will exterminate ⁹  that person from the midst of his people! ¹⁰  23:31 You must not do any work. [29:7]  ¹⁶ tn Heb “afflict yourselves”; NAB “mortify yourselves”; NIV, NRSV “deny yourselves.”

[29:7]  sn The verb seems to mean “humble yourself.” There is no explanation given for it. In the days of the prophets fasting seems to be associated with it (see Isa 58:3-5), and possibly the symbolic wearing of ashes.

[8:2]  ¹⁷ tn “Some” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

[8:2]  ¹⁸ sn Made loud lamentation. For someone who was stoned to death, lamentation was normally not allowed (m. Sanhedrin 6:6). The remark points to an unjust death.

[8:2]  ¹⁹ tn Or “mourned greatly for him.”

[3:1]  ²⁰ tn Heb “the sons of Israel.”

[3:1]  ²¹ tn The word “living” is not in the Hebrew text, but is implied. Some translations supply “settled” (cf. NAB, NIV, NLT).

[3:1]  ²² tc The translation reads with some medieval Hebrew MSS and ancient versions בְּעָרֵיהֶם (be’arehem, “in their towns”), rather than the reading בֶּעָרִים (be’arim, “in the towns”) found in the MT. Cf. Neh 7:72 HT [7:73 ET].

[3:1]  ²³ tn The Hebrew text adds the phrase “like one man.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.
