Lukas 1:17

Konteks
1:17 And he will go as forerunner before the Lord 1  in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, 2  to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”

Lukas 6:49

Konteks
6:49 But the person who hears and does not put my words into practice 3  is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When 4  the river burst against that house, 5  it collapsed immediately, and was utterly destroyed!” 6

Lukas 8:10

Konteks
8:10 He 7  said, “You have been given 8  the opportunity to know 9  the secrets 10  of the kingdom of God, 11  but for others they are in parables, so that although they see they may not see, and although they hear they may not understand. 12

Lukas 11:29

Konteks
The Sign of Jonah

11:29 As 13  the crowds were increasing, Jesus 14  began to say, “This generation is a wicked generation; it looks for a sign, 15  but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 16

[1:17]  1 tn Grk “before him”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:17]  2 sn These two lines cover all relationships: Turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children points to horizontal relationships, while (turn) the disobedient to the wisdom of the just shows what God gives from above in a vertical manner.

[6:49]  3 tn Grk “does not do [them].”

[6:49]  4 tn Grk “against which”; because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, the relative clause was converted to a temporal clause in the translation and a new sentence started here.

[6:49]  5 tn Grk “it”; the referent (that house) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[6:49]  6 tn Grk “and its crash was great.”

[6:49]  sn The extra phrase at the end of this description (and was utterly destroyed) portrays the great disappointment that the destruction of the house caused as it crashed and was swept away.

[8:10]  7 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[8:10]  8 tn This is an example of a so-called “divine passive,” with God understood to be the source of the revelation (see ExSyn 437-38).

[8:10]  9 tn Grk “it has been given to you to know.” The dative pronoun occurs first, in emphatic position in the Greek text, although this position is awkward in contemporary English.

[8:10]  10 tn Grk “the mysteries.”

[8:10]  sn The key term secrets (μυστήριον, musthrion) can mean either (1) a new revelation or (2) a revealing interpretation of existing revelation as in Dan 2:17-23, 27-30. Jesus seems to be explaining how current events develop old promises, since the NT consistently links the events of Jesus’ ministry and message with old promises (Rom 1:1-4; Heb 1:1-2). The traditional translation of this word, “mystery,” is misleading to the modern English reader because this English word suggests a secret which people have tried to uncover but which they have failed to understand (L&N 28.77).

[8:10]  11 sn The kingdom of God is a major theme of Jesus. It is a realm in which Jesus rules and to which those who trust him belong. See Luke 6:20; 11:20; 17:20-21.

[8:10]  12 sn A quotation from Isa 6:9. Thus parables both conceal or reveal depending on whether one is open to hearing what they teach.

[11:29]  13 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[11:29]  14 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[11:29]  15 sn The mention of a sign alludes back to Luke 11:16. Given what Jesus had done, nothing would be good enough. This leads to the rebuke that follows.

[11:29]  16 sn As the following comparisons to Solomon and Jonah show, in the present context the sign of Jonah is not an allusion to Jonah being three days in the belly of the fish, but to Jesus’ teaching about wisdom and repentance.
