Lukas 15:8

15:8 “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins ¹  and loses ²  one of them, ³  does not light a lamp, sweep ⁴  the house, and search thoroughly until she finds it?

Lukas 23:5

23:5 But they persisted ⁶  in saying, “He incites ⁷  the people by teaching throughout all Judea. It started in Galilee and ended up here!” ⁸ 

[15:8]  ¹ sn This silver coin is a drachma, equal to a denarius, that is, a day’s pay for the average laborer.

[15:8]  ² tn Grk “What woman who has ten silver coins, if she loses.” The initial participle ἔχουσα (ecousa) has been translated as a finite verb parallel to ἀπολέσῃ (apolesh) in the conditional clause to improve the English style.

[15:8]  ³ tn Grk “one coin.”

[15:8]  ⁴ tn Grk “and sweep,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

[17:29]  ⁵ sn And destroyed them all. The coming of the Son of Man will be like the judgment on Sodom, one of the most immoral places of the OT (Gen 19:16-17; Deut 32:32-33; Isa 1:10).

[23:5]  ⁶ tn Or “were adamant.” For “persisted in saying,” see L&N 68.71.

[23:5]  ⁷ sn He incites the people. The Jewish leadership claimed that Jesus was a political threat and had to be stopped. By reiterating this charge of stirring up rebellion, they pressured Pilate to act, or be accused of overlooking political threats to Rome.

[23:5]  ⁸ tn Grk “beginning from Galilee until here.”
