2:18 and all who heard it were astonished ¹  at what the shepherds said.

Lukas 2:47

2:47 And all who heard Jesus ²  were astonished ³  at his understanding and his answers.

[2:18]  ¹ tn Grk “marveled.” It is a hard word to translate with one term in this context. There is a mixture of amazement and pondering at work in considering the surprising events here. See Luke 1:21, 63; 2:33.

[2:47]  ² tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[2:47]  ³ sn There was wonder (all who heard…were astonished) that Jesus at such a young age could engage in such a discussion. The fact that this story is told of a preteen hints that Jesus was someone special.
