[2:2]  1 tn Or “was a minister of Syria.” This term could simply refer to an administrative role Quirinius held as opposed to being governor (Josephus, Ant. 18.4.2 [18.88]). See also Luke 2:1.

[10:5]  2 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[10:5]  3 tn Grk “Into whatever house you enter.” This acts as a distributive, meaning every house they enter; this is expressed more naturally in English as “whenever you enter a house.”

[10:5]  4 sn The statement ‘May peace be on this house!’ is really a benediction, asking for God’s blessing. The requested shalom (peace) is understood as coming from God.

[11:38]  5 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[11:38]  6 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[11:38]  7 tn The words “his hands” are not in the Greek text, but have been supplied for clarity.

[11:38]  sn Washing before meals was a cultural practice that was described in the OT, but not prescribed there (Gen 18:4; Judg 19:21). It was apparently related to concern about contracting ceremonial uncleanness (Lev 11:31-38; t. Demai 2.11-12).

[21:14]  8 tn Grk “determine in your hearts.”

[21:14]  9 tn This term could refer to rehearsing a speech or a dance. On its syntax, see BDF §392.2.
