20:20 Then ⁶  they watched him carefully and sent spies who pretended to be sincere. ⁷  They wanted to take advantage of what he might say ⁸  so that they could deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction ⁹  of the governor.

Lukas 21:12

21:12 But before all this, ¹⁰  they will seize ¹¹  you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues ¹²  and prisons. You ¹³  will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.

[4:6]  ² sn In Greek, this phrase is in an emphatic position. In effect, the devil is tempting Jesus by saying, “Look what you can have!”

[4:6]  ³ tn Or “authority.” BDAG 353 s.v. ἐξουσία 6 suggests, concerning this passage, that the term means “the sphere in which the power is exercised, domain.” Cf. also Luke 22:53; 23:7; Acts 26:18; Eph 2:2.

[4:6]  ⁴ tn The addendum referring to the glory of the kingdoms of the world forms something of an afterthought, as the following pronoun (“it”) makes clear, for the singular refers to the realm itself.

[4:6]  ⁵ tn For the translation of παραδέδοται (paradedotai) see L&N 57.77. The devil is erroneously implying that God has given him such authority with the additional capability of sharing the honor.

[20:20]  ⁶ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[20:20]  ⁷ tn Grk “righteous,” but in this context the point is their false sincerity.

[20:20]  ⁸ tn Grk “so that they might catch him in some word.”

[20:20]  ⁹ tn This word is often translated “authority” in other contexts, but here, in combination with ἀρχή (arch), it refers to the domain or sphere of the governor’s rule (L&N 37.36).

[21:12]  ¹⁰ sn But before all this. Another note of timing is present, this one especially important in understanding the sequence in the discourse. Before the things noted in vv. 8-11 are the events of vv. 12-19.

[21:12]  ¹¹ tn Grk “will lay their hands on you.”

[21:12]  ¹² sn Some of the persecution is of Jewish origin (the synagogues). Some fulfillment of this can be seen in Acts. See the note on synagogues in 4:15.

[21:12]  ¹³ tn Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
