Lukas 9:9

9:9 Herod said, “I had John ¹  beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” So Herod wanted to learn about Jesus. ²

Lukas 19:17

19:17 And the king ¹⁰  said to him, ‘Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful ¹¹  in a very small matter, you will have authority ¹²  over ten cities.’

[9:9]  ¹ tn Grk “John I beheaded”; John’s name is in emphatic position in the Greek text. The verb is causative, since Herod would not have personally carried out the execution.

[9:9]  ² tn The expression ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν αὐτόν (ezhtei idein auton, “was seeking to see him”) probably indicates that Herod, for curiosity’s sake or more likely for evil purposes, wanted to get to know Jesus, i.e., who he was and what he was doing. See I. H. Marshall, Luke (NIGTC), 357. Herod finally got his wish in Luke 23:6-12, with inconclusive results from his point of view.

[17:37]  ³ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[17:37]  ⁴ tn Grk “they”; the referent (the disciples, v. 22) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[17:37]  ⁵ tn Grk “answering, they said to him.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified in the translation.

[17:37]  ⁶ sn The question “Where, Lord?” means, “Where will the judgment take place?”

[17:37]  ⁷ tn Or “corpse.”

[17:37]  ⁸ tn The same Greek term can refer to “eagles” or “vultures” (L&N 4.42; BDAG 22 s.v. ἀετός), but in this context it must mean vultures, because the gruesome image is one of dead bodies being consumed by scavengers.

[17:37]  sn Jesus’ answer is that when the judgment comes, the scenes of death will be obvious and so will the location of the judgment.

[17:37]  ⁹ tn Grk “will be gathered.” The passive construction has been translated as an active one in English.

[19:17]  ¹⁰ tn Grk “he”; the referent (the nobleman of v. 12, now a king) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[19:17]  ¹¹ tn See Luke 16:10.

[19:17]  ¹² sn The faithful slave received expanded responsibility (authority over ten cities) as a result of his faithfulness; this in turn is an exhortation to faithfulness for the reader.
