[9:28]  1 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[9:29]  2 tc Most witnesses, even early and excellent ones (Ì45vid א2 A C D L W Θ Ψ Ë1,13 33 Ï lat co), have “and fasting” (καὶ νηστείᾳ, kai nhsteia) after “prayer” here. But this seems to be a motivated reading, due to the early church’s emphasis on fasting (TCGNT 85; cf., e.g., 2 Clem. 16:4; Pol. Phil 7:2; Did. 1:3; 7:4). That the most important witnesses (א* B), as well as a few others (0274 2427 k), lack καὶ νηστείᾳ, when a good reason for the omission is difficult to find, argues strongly for the shorter reading.

[11:23]  3 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[11:2]  4 tn Grk “the village lying before you” (BDAG 530 s.v. κατέναντι 2.b).

[11:2]  5 tn Grk “a colt tied there on which no one of men has ever sat.”

[4:29]  6 tn Or “Lord, take notice of.”

[4:29]  7 sn Grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage. The request is not for a stop to persecution or revenge on the opponents, but for boldness (great courage) to carry out the mission of proclaiming the message of what God is doing through Jesus.

[4:29]  8 tn Grk “slaves.” See the note on the word “servants” in 2:18.

[4:29]  9 tn Grk “word.”

[4:29]  10 tn Or “with all boldness.”

[4:30]  11 tn The miraculous nature of these signs is implied in the context.

[4:31]  12 tn Grk “And when.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

[4:31]  13 sn The place where they were assembled…was shaken. This signifies that God is in their midst. See Acts 16:26; Exod 19:18; Ps 114:7; Isa 6:4.

[4:31]  14 tn The imperfect verb has been translated as an ingressive imperfect (“began to speak”). Logical sequencing suggests that their speaking began after they were filled with the Spirit. The prayer was answered immediately.

[4:31]  15 tn Or “speak God’s message.”

[4:31]  16 tn Or “with boldness.”

[17:16]  17 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

[17:19]  18 tn Grk “coming, the disciples said.” The participle προσελθόντες (proselqontes) has been translated as a finite verb to make the sequence of events clear in English.

[17:20]  19 tn Grk “For truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.” Here γάρ (gar) has not been translated.

[17:20]  20 tn Grk “faith as,” “faith like.”

[17:20]  21 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[17:21]  22 tc Many important mss (א* B Θ 0281 33 579 892* pc e ff1 sys,c sa) do not include 17:21 “But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” The verse is included in א2 C D L W Ë1,13 Ï lat, but is almost certainly not original. As B. M. Metzger notes, “Since there is no satisfactory reason why the passage, if originally present in Matthew, should have been omitted in a wide variety of witnesses, and since copyists frequently inserted material derived from another Gospel, it appears that most manuscripts have been assimilated to the parallel in Mk 9.29” (TCGNT 35). The present translation follows NA27 in omitting the verse number as well, a procedure also followed by a number of other modern translations.

[9:40]  23 tn Grk “And I.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, καί (kai) has not been translated here; instead a new sentence was started in the translation.

[9:40]  24 sn Note the repetition of the verb from v. 38, an indication of the father’s desperation.

[9:40]  25 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

[9:40]  26 tn The words “do so” are not in the Greek text, but have been supplied for clarity and stylistic reasons.
