Mazmur 89:51-52

89:51 Your enemies, O Lord, hurl insults;

they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. ¹ 

89:52 ² The Lord deserves praise ³  forevermore!

We agree! We agree! ⁴ 

Yesaya 54:4

54:4 Don’t be afraid, for you will not be put to shame!

Don’t be intimidated, ⁵  for you will not be humiliated!

You will forget about the shame you experienced in your youth;

you will no longer remember the disgrace of your abandonment. ⁶ 

Yehezkiel 34:29

34:29 I will prepare for them a healthy ⁷  planting. They will no longer be victims ⁸  of famine in the land and will no longer bear the insults of the nations.

[89:51]  ¹ tn Heb “[by] which your enemies, O Lord, taunt, [by] which they taunt [at] the heels of your anointed one.”

[89:52]  ² sn The final verse of Ps 89, v. 52, is a conclusion to this third “book” (or major editorial division) of the Psalter. Similar statements appear at or near the end of each of the first, second and fourth “books” of the Psalter (see Pss 41:13; 72:18-19; 106:48, respectively).

[89:52]  ³ tn Heb “[be] blessed.” See Pss 18:46; 28:6; 31:21.

[89:52]  ⁴ tn Heb “surely and surely” (אָמֵן וְאָמֵן [’amen vÿ’amen], i.e., “Amen and amen”). This is probably a congregational response to the immediately preceding statement about the propriety of praising God; thus it has been translated “We agree! We agree!”

[54:4]  ⁵ tn Or “embarrassed”; NASB “humiliated…disgraced.”

[54:4]  ⁶ tn Another option is to translate, “the disgrace of our widowhood” (so NRSV). However, the following context (vv. 6-7) refers to Zion’s husband, the Lord, abandoning her, not dying. This suggests that an אַלְמָנָה (’almanah) was a woman who had lost her husband, whether by death or abandonment.

[34:29]  ⁷ tc The MT reads לְשֵׁם (lÿshem, “for a name”), meaning perhaps a renowned planting (place). The translation takes this to be a metathesis of שָׁלֹם (shalom) as was read by the LXX.
