97:10 You who love the Lord, hate evil!

He protects 1  the lives of his faithful followers;

he delivers them from the power 2  of the wicked.

[97:10]  1 tn The participle may be verbal, though it might also be understood as substantival and appositional to “the Lord.” In this case one could translate, “Hate evil, you who love the Lord, the one who protects the lives…and delivers them.”

[97:10]  2 tn Heb “hand.”

[12:11]  3 tn Grk “And when.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

[12:11]  4 tn Or “delivered.”

[12:11]  5 sn Here the hand of Herod is a metaphor for Herod’s power or control.

[12:11]  6 sn King Herod was Herod Agrippa I, the grandson of Herod I (Herod the Great).

[12:11]  7 sn Luke characterizes the opposition here as the Jewish people, including their leadership (see 12:3).
