• [Mat 16:16] Spirit Of Faith, Come Down

  Spirit of faith, come down, reveal the things of God, And make to us the Godhead known, and witness with the blood. ’Tis Thine the blood to apply and give us eyes to see, Who did for every sinner die hath surely died for me. No man can truly say that Jesus is the Lord, Unless Thou take the veil away and breathe the living Word. Then, only then, we feel our interest in His blood, And cry with joy unspeakable, “Thou art my Lord, my God!” O that the world might know the all atoning Lamb! Spirit of faith, descend and show the virtue of His Name; The grace which all may find, the saving power, impart, And testify to all mankind, and speak in every heart. Inspire the living faith (which whosoever receive, The witness in themselves they have and consciously believe), The faith that conquers all, and doth the mountain move, And saves whoever on Jesus call, and perfects them in love.

  “Thou art the Christ, O Lord, The Son of God most high!” For ever be adored That Name in earth and sky, In which, though mortal strength may fail, The saints of God at last prevail! Oh, surely he was blest With blessedness unpriced, Who, taught of God, confessed The Godhead in the Christ! For of Thy Church, Lord, Thou didst own Thy saint a true foundation stone. Thrice was he put to shame, Thrice did the dauntless fall; But, oh, that look that came From out the judgment hall! It pierced and broke the spell-bound heart, And foiled the tempter’s sifting art. Thrice fallen, thrice restored! The bitter lesson learnt, That heart for Thee, O Lord, With triple ardor burnt. The cross he took he laid not down, Until he grasped the martyr’s crown. Oh, bright triumphant faith! Oh, courage void of fears! Oh, love most strong in death! Oh, penitential tears! By these, Lord, keep us lest we fall, And make us go where Thou shalt call.

  Behold, the Master passeth by! O seest thou not His pleading eye? With low sad voice He calleth thee, “Leave this vain world, and follow Me.” O soul, bowed down with harrowing care, Hast thou no thought for Heaven to spare? From earthly toils lift up thine eye; Behold, the Master passeth by! One heard Him calling long ago, And straightway left all things below Counting his earthly gain as loss For Jesus and His blessèd cross. That “Follow Me” his faithful ear Seemed every day afresh to hear; Its echoes stirred his spirit still, And fired his hope, and nerved his will. God gently calls us every day: Why should we then our bliss delay? Thou, Lord, e’en now art calling me; I will leave all, and follow Thee.

  O I love to walk with Jesus Like the publicans of old, When He gathered them about Him And the blessèd tidings told; How He came to bring deliverance To the captives in distress, Take away our ev’ry burden, Giving perfect peace and rest. Refrain I will follow where He leadeth; I will pasture where He feedeth. I will follow all the way, Lord. I will follow Jesus ev’ry day. O I love to walk with Jesus Like the man of long ago Who had tarried by the wayside Near the gates of Jericho, Jesus heard his cry for mercy, Gave him back his sight that day, And immediately he followed Jesus all along the way.   The light of God is falling, Upon life’s common way; The Master’s voice is calling, “Come, walk with Me today”; No duty can seem lowly To him who lives with Thee, And all of life grows holy, O Christ of Galilee! Who shares his life’s pure pleasures, And walks the honest road, Who trades with heaping measures, And lifts his brother’s load, Who turns the wrong down bluntly, And lends the right a hand, He dwells in God’s own country, He tills the Holy Land. Where human lives are thronging In toil and pain and sin, While cloistered hearts are longing To bring the kingdom in, O Christ, the elder Brother Of proud and beaten men, When they have found each other, The kingdom will come then! Thy ransomed host in glory, All souls that sin and pray, Turn toward the cross that bore Thee; “Behold the Man!” they say; And while Thy church is pleading For all who would do good, We hear Thy true voice leading Our song of brotherhood.
